The importance of gratitude

Gratitude can give you something to hold onto.

So lately things have been super busy, sometimes crazy busy. Life seems like a balancing act where I am trying to stop the scales from tipping. I am sure that everyone can relate to this at some point, some maybe more than others, however at the end of the day that isn’t really important. What is important is how we manage these times of stress or overwhelm. At this point everyone has a choice. You can choose to let the scales tip and have a meltdown, or acknowledge the feeling, practice self-forgiveness and reframe the situation to find the positive side. There is always a positive side. It may not always be exactly what we want or the perfect scenario. But, when you start looking at things differently and focusing on things you are grateful for, things become a little easier. So, what exactly am I talking about?

I have several close friends who have family members that are very ill, family members that may not be with them for much longer. This is hard, at the time gut-wrenchingly hard. Saying goodbye to someone you love is one of the hardest things to come to terms with. So how can gratitude serve you here, how can you be grateful with a sadness in your heart? I have experienced this myself, it was hard, actually hard doesn’t really describe it. I am so grateful that I got to hold and pray with my nan when she passed from this life to the next. I am so grateful for every cup of tea with Grandad and his amazing stories even at the end. I am so grateful that I loved them with every ounce of my being and they knew how much they were loved. I am grateful that I have no regrets.

Gratitude changes everything.

I have 2 amazing boys and a husband that is the yin to my yang. We are both working are butts off to build a legacy to be proud of. This is exhausting, it involves compromise, understanding and time management that usually means 5 hours or less of sleep a night. So, I acknowledge that this can be challenging, and I am tired all the time, however ‘I have got this!’ I am so grateful to have an amazing family, I am grateful for the mummy cuddles after a ‘oh my goodness I am that parent’ tantrum lol. I am grateful that I can choose my mindset and see the light at the end of the tunnel and know it isn’t the train heading towards me.

Life is full of ups and downs, it’s a journey and it’s not always easy. Actually more often than not we are faced with challenges. When things get hard, stop, breath and think of 3 things you are grateful for today.

When I wrote this, I was grateful that school was going back. I am grateful for being able to share my day with my amazing husband. I am so grateful that I have some amazing friends in my life that I can call family. I am especially grateful for my son’s explanation of how to milk a cow at day care; ‘It’s really easy, you just pull it’s willy and the milk comes out’. Well, let’s just say it gave everyone a good giggle! Even when things feel like they suck, life feels hard and overwhelming, there are always things to be grateful for. Take the time to acknowledge them, you will be amazed at how far a little gratitude can go.

‘Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today & creates vision for tomorrow’
